Common Questions
Do I need digital waste tracking for 2026?+
Digital waste tracking becomes mandatory for permitted waste receiving sites in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland on 1 October 2026 (January 2027 in Scotland). For waste carriers, brokers, dealers, exporters, and producers (Phase 2), the mandatory requirement begins in October 2027. Traditional paper-based Waste Transfer Notes and Consignment Notes remain required for transit until Phase 2 is fully implemented.
What roles can I register as on Wasters.io?+
You can register as a Producer (you create waste), Carrier (you transport waste), Receiver (you treat or dispose of waste), or Broker/Dealer (you arrange waste movements on behalf of others). Many organisations operate across multiple roles and can manage all of them from a single dashboard.
What happens if I don't comply with digital waste tracking?+
Non-compliance carries serious consequences including vehicle seizure, on-the-spot fines, and operational stoppages. Receiving sites are legally barred from accepting untracked loads. Directors can be held personally liable for systemic non-compliance under the Environment Act 2021.
Is Wasters compatible with the DEFRA system?+
Yes. Wasters is designed to integrate with DEFRA's central Digital Waste Tracking Service via their API. When you create a waste movement on our platform, the data is formatted and submitted to the official government system, ensuring full regulatory compliance.
